4/26/14: Newberry National Volcanic Monument

A fascinating geologic sidetrip in the Bend, Oregon area must include the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.  BB, Henri and me took advantage of a spectacular day in central Oregon to visit this site.

The Newberry National Volcanic Monument is located south of Bend, Oregon, near La Pine Oregon, off of US 97.

This area was designated in 1990 to protect the area around the Newberry Volcano, and was created within the boundaries of the Deschutes National Forest, and managed by the U.S. Forest Service.  The monument includes 50,000 acres of lakes, lava flows, and spectacular geologic features.
